The Evolution Of Matrimony and Matchmaking In India

Matrimony apps and sites have evolved over time and in the last ten years , we have seen a massive rise in the number of matrimonies , that too divided among the states. Many matrimonies have decided to stick to there respective states , giving rise to searches for tamil matrimony , odia matrimony and much more. While there are a few top players in this industry , most of the matrimonies exist for only their particular state. In today's blog , we'll try to understand how the matrimonial industry has changed in the last ten years and how it could look like in the upcoming years.

The Past

In the past , nothing existed of matrimonial source. Instead, there was a large network of matchmakers across India. Many of these matchmakers were people with regular day jobs but also had many families in mutual connection  who were looking to get their children married and were in search of a groom/bride. This gave them a chance to earn something extra while also making two families unite. Many of these matchmakers could be any of your distant relatives. The concept of "Kanyadaan" (giving away the daughter) was a sacred duty, and marriages were considered more of a family alliance than an individual choice. The Problem that people noticed over time with these matchmakers were that all of them becoming more greedy with passing time and started taking a rathe fat sum from the money that people used to save up for the grand event of their children's marriage. The children were not very happy with the pressure that these relatives started putting on their respective families , just for the sake of their profits. As the early two thousands began crawling upon us , the newer generation was fed up with these old systems and wanted a better process for their arranged marriage.

The Present

Arranged marriages remain the preferred choice for a majority of Indians, especially in tier-2 & tier-3 cities and rural areas. However , there is a new angle now. Through the use of the technological edge that we carry now has now created a chain of matchmakers who work for a bigger platform and are treated as full time employees now. A certain decentralization had hit the matrimonial industry. New platforms emerged , which offered a database of profiles for you to choose from. The children were now way happier than earlier times , while the uncertainty of an arranged marriage still looms over , parents and children have a bigger picture to look at. Major scale players emerged and investment poured in like never before. everything was perfect until , 'Matrimony Scams' took over.

Matrimony Scams

When Internet and Technology became widely accessible across all of our country , some people used it to start a malicious trend of conducting remote phishing scams. Some people called the victims in the name of a bank , while some used a made up matrimony name to fish money out of people's pockets. Parent's who were desperate to get their children married , fell for the scams faster than ever. they believed a matrimony would miraculously find an ideal partner for their child in mere seconds and these fraud non existent matrimonies promise them all of these superficially and bait them into depositing a big amount into their accounts and once the money is sent, they suddenly stop existing. They vanish into thin air the next day. In the last five years post covid , millions of such scam incidents have been reported very frequently. Even state banks and official government bodies , are airing daily announcements to spread awareness around these issues but people still seem to fall prey to their backhanded tactics. While we have already discussed about 'how to protect yourselves from such matrimony scams', It is also not to be considered that everybody with such technology in this industry is running a scam.

Finding the perfect life partner has always been a crucial milestone in Indian culture. Traditionally, families relied on matchmakers, priests, and community networks, but the landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. Thanks to online matrimony platforms, the matchmaking process has become faster, safer, and more efficient, blending tradition with modern technology.
